The Blizzard World of Warcraft user interface is not bad, by all means, but there are many addons that are much more advanced and give players a lot more to work with than Blizzard does. Cartographer is such an addon. It is a replacement for the world map that Blizzard has implemented, and includes several modules that improve and extend the map.
Cartographer will let players see the whole map, even the areas you haven’t discovered. It will let you put your own notes anywhere on the map and it will show maps of instances. You can put notes on the instance maps, of course. It will show the location of any guild members that are using cartographer, and it can track herbs and veins and display them on the map. On top of this, the addon comes with zone information for all zones. You can see level range for your zone, as well as a list of instances (with group limits shown) for every zone.
Now, there’s more greatness coming. You can download a module for cartographer called Quests, that will show you information about quest givers and what quests they give on the map. This is very useful if you don’t have memorized where all the quest givers in Azeroth are located, like me (yeah right). The database will be improved ever time you find new quest givers, but you can find database files including most quests on the internet already.
You’d think that was it, but there’s more! There’s a module you can download for cartographer that will make your questing so much easier called QuestObjectives. At it’s core, it adds notes to your map whenever a quest is updated. For instance if you are on a kill quest to kill ogres it will make a note on the map where you kill an ogre when the quest log updates saying you have killed X out of Y ogres. This also includes items you have to interact with on quests. It will show different icons depending on what your objective is. If it’s a kill quest, it will show two swords where you killed a monster of the correct type for the quest, and a bag if there’s a particular item you need to gather. The icons will grow in size the more likely it is that a location is the correct one. There’s even options for sharing objectives. You can request information from anyone in your guild who are using this addon.
This addon will obviously become more and more useful as time goes by as it saves all of this info. You can find database files that include most of both Alliance and Horde quests on the net though, so you don’t have to start from scratch. Using Cartographer with these addons has made my questing and leveling a lot faster and less of a time-waste (We don’t consider gaming a time-waste in general, do we?).![]()
